The Volga river

The Volga (the Ra in ancient times, the Itil in the Middle Ages) is located in the European part of Russia. The Volga is the largest river in Europe and one of the largest rivers in the world. Its length is 3530 km and the basin area is 1360 thousand square kilometers.

The Volga comes from the Valdai Hills (at an altitude of 229 m) and flows into the Caspian Sea. The river mouth lies 28 m below sea level. The total drop is 256 m. The Volga is the world’s largest river of internal flow, it does not flow into the world ocean.

The Volga river system includes 151 thousand streams with a total length of 574 thousand km. The Volga receives about 200 tributaries, the left tributaries are more numerous than the right. Its basin occupies about 1/3 of the European territory of Russia and extends from the Central Russian hills in the west to the Urals in the East.

Traditionally the Volga basin is divided into 3 parts: the upper Volga, from the source to the river mouth of the Oka; the middle Volga, from the confluence of the Oka and the river mouth of the Kama; and the lower Volga, from the confluence of the Kama and the river mouth.

Geographically, the Volga basin includes Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Ulyanovsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Yaroslavl, Ivanovo, Kostroma, Moscow, Smolensk, Tverskaya, Vladimir, Kaluga, Oryol, Ryazan, Vologda, Kirov, Penza, Tambov, Tula, Tula Territory, Udmurtia, Mari El, Mordovia, Chuvashia, Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Kalmykia, Komi, Moscow and Atyrau region of Kazakhstan. 3 out of 4 cruise directions we offer take you via its grand waterways with stops in the cities of more than 20 cultures!
