The Don river

The Don is one of the largest rivers in the European part of Russia. The Don River originates from a small stream Urvanka near Novomoskovsk (a city in the Tula region) on the Central Russian Upland at an altitude of 180 meters above sea level. Its length is 1870 km and the basin area is 425 thousand square kilometers. The first ancient description of the Don river (Tan, Tana, Tanais) is found in Herodotus, who considered it “the eighth Scythian river, the main European-Asian border”.

Large cities as Rostov-on-Don, Azov, Kalach-on-Don, Voronezh, Zadonsk and Novomoskovsk were built on the river. Near the town of Kalach-on-Don, the Don River approaches the Volga for the shortest distance of 80 km. It was in this place in 1952 that the Volga-Don Canal linked together the two greatest Russian rivers.

The Volga-Don Canal navigates to the Volga, from where, through a system of rivers, lakes and artificial canals, you can get to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yaroslavl, Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Cheboksary, Astrakhan, Ufa and Perm, as well as to the Black, Azov, Caspian, Baltic and White seas.
