The motorship «Volga Star» is a classical ship of the project 302. After several renovations and refurbishments the ship obtained the level of an upgrade necessary to meet the modern standards of the class. The interior of public areas is kept in a traditional style with a touch of thoughtful luxury. The ship can take 200 tourists on board. There are two restaurants, two bars, a music salon, a reading lounge, a dance hall, and a sun deck with sunbathing areas on board. Spacious outer decks with cozy sitting areas and promenade, and conveniently arranged internal premises make the ship a really great choice for river cruising.

DAY 1, Rostov-on-Don

Welcome aboard our comfortable ship. After boarding and checking-in at the reception desk, crew members take you to the cabin, where you can have free time to relax and prepare for an exciting journey.

DAY 2, Rostov-on-Don

A bus sightseeing tour will introduce you to the capital of the Don Region and the Southern Federal District, its history, architecture and culture. Rostov-on-Don was founded in 1749 on the banks of the river Don, named after the Cossack outpost – St. Dmitry Donskoy. The city developed rapidly and became one of the largest merchant centers in the south of Russia between the central part of Russia and the North Caucasus. While traveling in Rostov, you will see the main street - Bolshaya Sadovaya with old merchant mansions; will cross the European-Asian border; will hear about Rostov Las Vegas - the left bank of the Don; will take a walk along the promenade and admire the beauty of «Fatherland Quiet Don», monuments dedicated to both real people and events, and characters from novels. The first stop after departure is Starocherkassk. During a walking tour of the village you will visit the main square - Maidan, where the Cossack trophies of the 17th century Azov campaigns are stored; Cossack smoking houses; the main temple is the Resurrection Cathedral; Ataman compound; will get acquainted with the life, customs and ceremonies of the Cossacks.

DAY 3, Cruising Volga-Don Canal

Today during the day you will have a unique chance to observe the movement of the ship through the locks of the Volga-Don Canal opened on July 27, 1952. The construction of the canal made it possible to combine all five seas of the European part of Russia (the USSR that time) into one water transport system. The total length of the canal is 101 km. It was built 13 locks, three reservoirs, two waterworks, 13 dams and dams and a number of other structures. Each gateway is originally decorated with sculptural compositions and reflects certain milestones of the construction of the canal and the history of the country. You can take great pictures, as well as take part in various entertainment events prepared for you by our guides.

DAY 4, Volgograd

Today you will visit Volgograd, a city known throughout the world as a symbol of World War II tragedy. In 1589, there was a fortress on this site, which became a city and received the name Tsaritsyn. In 1925, the city was renamed to Stalingrad and during the World War II it became the site of a decisive battle with the Nazi invaders. Since almost 90% of the buildings were destroyed, you will see a city that was practically rebuilt, but still preserving living evidence of those years. During the tour you will see a monument-ensemble «Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad» on Mamaev Kurgan built on a total area of 220 hectares, including the Pantheon of Glory and the largest statue of Europe «The Motherland calls».

DAY 5, Cruising the Volga river

During the day our ship goes along the Volga, the longest river in the European part of Russia, also known as the Volga Mother. You can admire the picturesque landscapes of its shores, take interesting pictures of representatives of the southern flora and fauna. During the day watch movies, take part in funny contests held by our guides and enjoy a concert of musicians.

DAY 6, Astrakhan

Astrakhan is an ancient hospitable city also known as «Fishing capital», «Gateway to the Caspian Sea», «Volga Venice». The names of the best Russian architects of the 18th-19th centuries are associated with Astrakhan which is among the historically valuable cities of Russia. During the tour you will see and learn a lot of interesting things about famous historical and architectural monuments of the city. You will see Swan Lake, the Kremlin, the Gubins' mansion, the former building of the Russian-Asian Bank, the former East Bank building, the former prison castle, the Novodevichy monastery, the tower of Transfiguration Monastery and much more.

DAY 7, Cruising

After a busy program in Astrakhan, you will have time to relax and unwind in the bars on board, enjoy the beauty of nature, take sunbaths on the open deck. Do not forget to participate in contests and quizzes, song and dance lessons held by our guides.

DAY 8, Volgograd

Today our vessel is back to Volgograd. You can go on an additional excursion to the famous military cemetery in Rossoshka, which is a memorial burial place for Russian and German soldiers who died on this land. If you wish, you can continue exploring the city yourself. The river station is located in the central part of Volgograd, which allows you easily visit the local market, walk along the main streets, ride the famous Volgograd high-speed tram (ground analogue of the metro).

DAY 9, Saratov

A sightseeing tour of Saratov will give a wonderful opportunity to «turn over the pages» of more than 400-year history of the city, get acquainted with amazing legends, see interesting sights, visit beautiful places of Saratov. Looking at the Trinity Cathedral on Museum Square, you can imagine the life of «the original» Saratov; driving along the Cosmonauts Avenue you will learn about Saratov «space». On the top of Sokolovaya Gora you will be able to look at the whole city, which opens at a glance. Here you will see an exhibition of military equipment in the open air, a monument «Cranes» dedicated to the Saratovites who died during World War II.

DAY 10, Samara

During the tour you will learn about the way «Samara fortress» was created and how a provincial city developed and what contributed to its rapid settlement. You will see Samara Academic Drama Theater named after Gorky, the House of merchant Kurlin, buildings of Gothic architecture - the Lutheran Church of St. George and the Roman Catholic Church, the Zhiguli Brewery, the Iversky Convent, the modern Glory Square and the real Soyuz launch vehicle and much more.

DAY 11, Ulyanovsk (formerly Simbirsk)

This ancient Russian city was founded as a fortress in 1648 and was called Simbirsk till 1924, then it was renamed to Ulyanovsk after V.I. Ulyanov (Lenin), whose family lived here from 1869 to 1887. The house where Lenin was born is now open as a museum with a modest interior of the family, recreating a picture of the future leader’s family life. Ulyanovsk is the birthplace of A. F. Kerensky, I. A. Goncharov, N. M. Karamzin and world-famous UAZ vehicles. A sightseeing tour shows the most important places located in the central part of the city, introduces you to the history of Simbirsk and Ulyanovsk, and to the life of a modern city, its inhabitants.

DAY 12, Kazan

Today you visit the capital of Tatarstan - Kazan, a city with a thousand-year history, where East and West, Christianity and Islam intersect. You will get acquainted with the city, learn its history, visit the Kazan Kremlin, see the legendary Kul mosque, built from archival sources as a symbol of the nation revival, see the palace of the President of Tatarstan and the falling tower of Syuyumbike. Then you will walk along Kremlin Street, where the most respectable historical buildings of the 18th century are located. You will feel the confluence of west and east when you visit the Old Tatar settlement, you will see the first stone mosque of Mardzhani, and you will also find out where the countless treasures of the Kazan khans are kept now.

DAY 13, Cheboksary

The city of Cheboksary was founded in the 13th century as a fortress and directly performed military functions till the end of the 17th century. Then Cheboksary became a trading city on the banks of the Volga. Today, the city is the capital of Chuvashia and is also the main industrial center of the republic. Getting off the ship, you will see the monument to Mother Patroness, standing on the ancient hill of the Cheboksary Bay and being a symbol of the city and the whole republic as a whole, a symbol of the Chuvash people’s spiritual values revival. During a city tour you will see the building of the National Museum, drive along the Cheboksary Arbat (merchant Efremov Boulevard) - a pedestrian street in the historic district of the city; enjoy the view of Vvedensky Cathedral (1657) and the Holy Trinity Monastery, founded in 1566. You will see the Victory Memorial Park with its monument «Military Glory» with the Eternal Flame, monuments to soldiers-internationalists, soldiers who died in Chechnya, liquidators of the Chernobyl accident, the chapel in memory of St. John and the Cascade Fountain. Do not miss the chance to taste the beer from the Foamy Collection, known throughout Russia.

DAY 14, Nizhny Novgorod

The city was founded in 1221 and thanks to its favorable geographical position acquired the importance of a large commercial and cultural center. In 1932 it was renamed to Gorky after the writer Maxim Gorky, a native of the city, but in 1991 the historical name was returned. For many years, Gorky remained a «closed» city and became a place of exile for disgraced academician A. Sakharov. During the tour you will get acquainted with the main attractions of Nizhny Novgorod, drive through the historical streets that have preserved the beauty and former grandeur. Visit Minin and Pozharsky Square, M. Gorky, Sennaya and others. You will visit the observation platforms from where «breathtaking» views of the river part of the city open, visit the Stroganov (Christmas) church-monument of architecture of the seventeenth century. At the end of the tour, you will take a fascinating walking tour of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, where the oldest Nizhny Novgorod Cathedral - Mikhailo - Arkhangelsky is located.

DAY 15, Plyos

Plyos is the city of the Golden Ring of Russia, founded on the high right bank of the Volga as a military fortress bordering those times, which was supposed to protect the northern borders of Vladimir-Suzdal Rus from the constant military invasions of Volga Bulgaria. Since 1890 Plyos becomes a vacation spot for Moscow and St. Petersburg residents and turns into a resort city. The main attraction of Plyos is the Plyos State Historical, Architectural and Art Museum including a unique, surprisingly picturesque architectural and landscape ensemble of Plyos and its environs.

DAY 16, Kostroma

Kostroma is one of the cities that make up the Golden Ring of Russia. During the tour you will drive along the ancient streets of the city, admire the ancient architecture, white stone churches, old Trading rows, see the visiting card of Kostroma - a fire tower, the most beautiful parish church of the city - the twelve-domed Church of the Resurrection on Debre, the only surviving 16th-century church church in Kostroma. Continuing the tour you will visit the world famous Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery - the cradle of the Romanov dynasty, located on the arrow between the Volga and Kostroma rivers. View the architectural ensemble of the monastery, Trinity Cathedral, the tomb of the Godunov boyars, the chamber of the Romanov boyars.

DAY 17, Yaroslavl

A sightseeing tour of Yaroslavl will introduce you to the numerous monuments and museums of this city. Yaroslavl is absolutely worth seeing, it is the largest city of the Golden Ring of Russia, more ancient than Moscow (first mentioned in 1071). The city is named after the famous Prince Yaroslav the Wise, who, according to legend, killed a bear with a battle ax in the forest, which was worshiped by local pagans, and founded the first wooden city in this place, the bear and ax became its symbol.
During a sightseeing bus tour, we will visit the UNESCO-protected Church of Elijah the Prophet, whose arches are decorated with icons and frescoes of the 17th century and the territory of the magnificent 13th-century ensemble of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. We will see a group of majestic cathedrals of the 17th century, the newly built gold-domed Assumption Cathedral, destroyed after the revolution, the graceful rotunda and the remains of an ancient shopping center, we will walk along the embankment to the arrow, the place where the Kotorosl River flows into the Volga.

DAY 18, Uglich

The city of Uglich, founded in 1148, is located in a place of rare beauty, the place where the Volga makes a sharp bend, forming a kind of corner (from which it got its name). During a walking tour you will visit the Uglich Kremlin Architectural Complex, which consists of two churches, the Chamber of Specific Princes, the Transfiguration Cathedral and, of course, the Church of St. Dmitry Tsarevich on Blood (Much has happened to Uglich, but the main event that had happened on May 15, 1591 overturned the city's history. On that day Prince Dmitry, an eight-year-old son of Ivan the Terrible, was killed on this day and found dead in the garden in mysterious circumstances). Here you can taste the most delicious Uglich cheese, quench your thirst with the purest Uglich water from a local source and buy the world-famous Uglich watch «Chayka» («The Seagull»).

Can I book transfers?
Yes, Cruise By River does offer transfer service. Upon receiving your request our team would be happy to provide you with personal transfers to/from the airport. To receive a quote for airport transfers, please send a detailed request, including your flight details, on your booking conversation page.
Can I book pre & post accommodation?
Cruise By River does offer either pre or post accommodations. We can assist you with more information on the embarkation & disembarkation days and reserve for you the best available hotels. We also can provide you with additional tourist excursions within your staying in there.
Are shore excursions included?
Shore excursions listed in the day by day itineraries are included in the cruise fare. All other shore excursions are optional, to guarantee a space we recommend to book the English shore excursion package in advance. Please note minimum participation levels may be required in order for the shore excursion program to operate.
Can I pay in instalments?
Yes, you can! We provide a 0% interest instalment plan to help you budget for your trip. You can manually make payments to your booking whenever it suits you via your Cruise By River account section. You can make these payments after you've made your initial payment and before your final payment due date.
Is travel insurance included?
Travel Insurance is not included in the tours. We recommend World Nomads travel insurance as just one of many travel insurance companies you can use. Insurance can cover the cost of your airfare, as well as your tour in the case of unforeseen cancellation. It ensures that you do not have to worry about any unplanned changes to your travel plans, such as having to rush home to an ill family member or having a tour changed or cancelled because of a natural disaster. It can even help with smaller things - like lost luggage or stolen cameras. When considering which policy is best for you, you may also want to consider what coverage they provide if you have to cancel your booking or if anything happens whilst on tour.
Can you assist in getting visa and a Letter of Invitation for this tour?

Do I need to print out my vouchers?
It is recommended to print your vouchers as well as having an electronic copy so that you have a backup copy when travelling. However if you do not have the facility to print the voucher, an electronic copy to show your tour guide will be fine. For suistanable and environmental reasons, all travel vouchers are sent to you electronically by email. If your tour operator provides vouchers or travel documents they will be sent to you approximately 2-3 weeks before your tour departs. Please ensure that all of your passenger details are complete so that the operator can send you your voucher or travel documents on time.
